by nauman November 15, 2009

If you are a millionaire, a movie/rock star or own a business comprising of multiple food chains or something like it, I would seriously urge you to hit Ctrl+W and look somewhere else for whatever you are looking for to kill time. You may also do it by simply clicking the “X” sign in the right top corner of your screen, for the information provided here is by no means meant for you. It is in fact meant for people who happen to fall in the salaried class, by the salaried class I mean those people who work all month long and then queue up for the monthly check which somehow vaporizes in less than a month.

How to Prepare for, Prevent, and Survive a Terrorist Attack

by Ammara November 12, 2009

 untitled

Pakistan is currently under a deadly wave of suicide bombings. The nightly-news is replete with stories of terrorists placing explosives on their bodies, in bags, or into vehicles and detonating the bombs and themselves among crowds of innocent civilians. With bombing incidents happening increasingly in our country, we can no longer take safety for granted and must take measures to protect & defend ourselves. For this purpose I have developed a guide from various reliable internet sources that is a must-read for everyone. But first, a little background.

Suicide Bombings – The ideology behind them & the terror they create

Suicide bombing is the concept of killing oneself while killing others. The target of a suicide bomber is usually a highly populated space which is likely to be a well-known, public area, usually at peak times. Currently in Pakistan, suicide bombing is the most frequently used tactic in terrorist attacks. This is the most damaging method in terms of destruction of life, property and evidence

When Terror Strikes Close to Home

by Ammara November 6, 2009

One reads and hears about terrorist attacks all the time these days, but it is only when one has a narrow escape that one realizes the true horror behind such an experience. The following is a true account of the terrorist attack that occurred back in December 2003 when the then President, Pervez Musharraf’s motorcade was attacked twice near Chaklala Scheme 3. Around 16 people died and dozens were injured in that attack. It is intended as an eye-opener for those people who even in these terrible times are still of the “it-can’t-happen-to-me” variety and believe themselves invincible to any such attacks.

Why the West Craves Materialism & Why the East Sticks to Religion – A must read article by Imran Khan

by Ammara November 1, 2009

I recently came across a brilliant article by Imran Khan that I really wanted to share witimran_khanh you guys. In this article, Mr. Khan effortlessly explains something very complicated in the simplest of manners, which in my opinion, is the true mark of a skillful writer. What I really liked about this piece is that it is very relatable and applicable to the current situation prevalent in our country. It talks about our prejudices towards our own religion and culture, and our deep inferiority complex of the West that has been passed down from generation to generation. Imran rightly points out our hollow concepts of religion and how we are all guilty of practicing it selectively as per convenience. He goes on to talk about the importance of spiritual well being and how studying and understanding the true fundamentals of Islam has helped him achieve inner peace and become a better human being. He finishes off by emphasizing how important it is for us (the educated class) to do the same if we want to:

  • Understand the true meaning of Islam
  • Create a middle ground between the two extremes prevalent in the country today
  • Fight and eradicate extremism
  • Portray Islam to the Western world in its true essence, which is of a progressive and liberal religion and not the gun wielding, blood thirsty satanic one it is seen today

Is your baby giving you the blues?

by Ammara October 30, 2009

You’ve seen it in all those feel-good movies – A barely perspiring mother has just given birth to a beautiful, healthy baby. A smiling nurse hands the baby (wrapped in a blanket, all pink and perfect) over to the glowing mother while the father looks on, beaming with pride. The mother coosbaby_blues_article in her baby’s ear telling her how beautiful she is and the legendary mother and child bonding begins right there. Beautiful isn’t it? You have this picture perfect image imprinted in your mind for years until the day you have to deliver a baby of your very own. You’re so looking forward to being that smiling, glowing mother whispering sweet nothings in your baby’s ear, and to having the whole family gather around you admiring you and the new addition to your family. And that’s when REALITY sets in. By the time you come out of the wretched delivery room after an agonizing 18-20 hour labor, you feel like you’ve just gone to hell and back. You’re cursing the very thought of procreation and don’t have the energy to even lift your head, let alone the baby. You cannot stand the sight (or sound) of ANY relative and as far as your husband is concerned, he better stay as far away from you as possible if he doesn’t want to be turned into a human punching bag. When the baby is handed over to you for that first feeding session, you stare at it like it’s an alien from another planet. What is WRONG with me??! You wonder. Nothing sweetheart! Welcome to the baby blues!

Go Pink in October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month

by Ammara October 18, 2009

Cancer is a devastating disease and is everyone’s worst nightmare. Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer. Over 500,000 women die from breast cancer each year. The risk for women of getting it in their lifetime is about 1 in 8. The bad news is thapink-ribbon-798895t breast cancer is NOT preventable. The cause of breast cancer remains unknown and there is no known way to prevent breast cancer at this time. There are several effective ways to reduce—but not eliminate—the risk of breast cancer in women at high risk. The good news is that if it’s detected early enough, it’s easier to treat and prevent from spreading. When breast cancer is detected early and treated promptly, suffering and ultimately the loss of life can be significantly reduced. For early stage breast cancer, there are more treatment options, treatment can be less disfiguring and less toxic and survival is improved.

October is the breast cancer awareness month and fortunately, breast cancer awareness is at an all-time high. Many women’s lives are being saved by a heightened understanding of the disease and early detection. And the sole purpose and intent of this post is to let all women know that the ONLY key to surviving breast cancer is early detection and treatment.
