Opera Mini was launched about a year back for the Android. It was called Opera 4 then, now we have Opera Mini 5 (Beta) available for download which has some very impressive features. The guys at Opera say that this browser “makes your mobile browsing experience as close as it can be to your desktop experience.” The new features introduced are:

• Tabbed Browsing: Needs no explaining, but this is feature is a must for smart phones.
• Speed Dial: On opening a new Tab, users are presented with a list of small icons, a click takes them to the desired page.
• Opera Link: With this feature users can synchronize their bookmarks and Speed Dial between their Mobile Phones and Desktop Computers.
• Download Manager: OMG, manage downloads form your smart device. This options lets users Pause and Resume downloads at will.
• Page Compression by about 90% ensures that browsing speed are greatly increased.
• Page Zoom.
• Password Manager: Users won’t have to remember those countless passwords instead the manager will store them on the Phone.
• Landscape Mode.

The Mozilla Firefox RC2 is now available for download. As usual it is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in over 70 languages. The release notes can be accessed here and known issues are documented here. Some of the features of Firefox 3.6 RC2 are:

• Support for WOFF font format.
• Support for latest web technologies like DOM, CSS and HTML5.
• They say the browser performance has improved considerably at startup.
• Automatic alerts for out of date plug-ins.
• Off course Personas come supported and are just a click away.
• A lot of bug fixes and improvements in stability, security and performance.
• The usual add-ons are also supported.

By the way Mozilla Firefox just recently made available the release candidate of Firefox for Maemo. All those in possession of a Nokia N900 or N810 can also get it from the Mozilla website for Mobile devices.

How it works is by rendering requested web pages on a server using the Gecko rendering engine before sending the rendered output to the browser. The output is sent as images annotated with interactive items such as links and text-fields. The result is that the browser is able to use features from a fully-featured desktop web browser without the need to have a powerful mobile device. Features such as Adobe Flash, Silverlight and QuickTime are usable without additional plug-ins on the device, and can be easily updated server-side without the need to update the client.
