Well, during the whole Hoopla of iPAD2, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy S (iOS and android based tablets) the world is shifting towards using tablets for consuming content and entertainment purposes. This really means people will typically not produce anything serious and productive from these tablets. That’s ok, but what about people who actually wants to create something on their tablets, I believe the answer is ASUS Eee Slate in comparison to Apple iPad and Android based tablets.
ASUS Eee Slate is a Windows 7 based tablet with screen size of 12.1-inch and Core i5-equipped processor. The most important aspect of this tablet is Wacom digitizer and a dedicated silo in its side for accommodating that snow-white stylus9 (ideal for note taking and artists using Photoshop and other tools). There is an add-on bluetooth keyboard available as well within the package which you can for some serious typing and content creation. It’s a part PC and part Tablet.
Since it’s a full blown OS under the hood ( means its 100% multi tasking environment) and I don’t need to buy separate apps for consuming different types of media ( Silverlight and flash enabled ) and playing simple games, I can use Microsoft office suite and outlook for full office productivity. I can access my home & office network for sharing files and pictures and also stream movies from my central PC. Furthermore, I can hook my digital camera, wireless mouse, usb drives, and printers directly without any adapters, with availability of HDMI output I can even hook my LCD and watch high definition movies. The most exciting element is that I can have synchronize my content and on cloud as well as any other PC. This thing also comes preloaded with amazon kindle hence an eBook reader by default.
Now this slate is ideal for someone like me, who produces content in addition to consuming it while also using the PC for entertainment purposes. The only thing I got against this is the battery life, If only they could do something about the battery it would be great, having said that, I do understand that battery life on this beast is difficult because of so many background stuff happening in Windows 7 as it is a full blown OS. I can understand $999 price tag as it has a WACOM digitizer which makes it ideal for artists and people who want to have pen like experience and want a real replacement of paper/pen/pad. I’d consider this tablet until Microsoft unleashes Windows 8 based tablet and still holding on buying iPad2 or Android based tablets because they cannot make my laptop go away.
