android-logo Sometime back it was Symbian OS which gave users the flexibility of installing hundreds of thousands of applications, then iPhone overshadowed everything by making available thousands of applications at the Apple website, now its Android’s turn. The Google based OS for smart phones that is poised to take the world by storm has an equally impressive number of applications lined up for its loyal followers. Some of the most wanted are described here in not so fine detail. The applications/games introduced here have been selected after much surfing and browsing.

 

  • Wapedia. Originally developed by Taptu Limited the application makes it possible for users to access Wikipedia contents on their Android based phones. The application is fast in accessing content even on 2G Networks. This is a must have utility for Wikipedia fans. Its features included news items, image rendering, auto-complete feature for article titles, support for multiple languages and links to alternative wikis.
  • Facebook. The application has been developed by Facebook off course and makes it possible to access one’s Facebook account on the go. Through this one can stay updated on his social circle activities, look at friend’s walls, see news and live feeds and even upload photos from the phone.
  • Twidgit Lite. This is a small application used for remaining in touch with Twitter updates. It keeps users updated with the latest timeline feed, one can view last twenty tweets. One can also tweet and retweet, besides setting up his/her status.
  • Google Maps. Google Maps will make your life easy by bringing Google Maps on to your 3.2” screen of the Android powered device. The application gives driving directions, traffic details, street views and business listings. Besides all this one can search by voice commands and get transit and walking directions.
  •  Movies by Flixter. The same application which created a furor for movie buffs is now available for Android. It is free for download. The glaring features include ability to view show times and details for top box office hits, read flick reviews, get directions to theatre maps including phone numbers, besides being able to watch high res trailers.
  • FeedR. news Reader. The application by FeedR will turn your device in to a news paper. Subscribe to the service you want whether it is CNN, BBC or even Digg and simply stay updated on the latest happenings from around the world. This thing supports Podcasts as well besides Atom and RSS.
  • Amazon.com. As if the name doesn’t say it all, ok I will describe it here for you. Check prices of items, books, music and everything else that is available at Amazon. You can also read reviews, and make purchases online. If you can snap a barcode of an item the application will try to locate it on Amazon!
  • WiFi OnOff. Again the name says it all, this little app makes it possible to turn On or Off your device’s WiFi in an instant. The application has been developed by CurveFish. Will do you good by simply turning your connection on with a single tap.
  • Scan2PDF Mobile. The application has been developed by BurroTech and will allow users to scan a document using the phone camera and then convert the page/s in to a PDF document. This could then be e-mailed from the device. The PDFs are saved on the external or the internal memory for later retrieval. Compression technology reduces the document size for reading/viewing it on the device screen.
  • OpenTable. The app has been developed by Opentable. It will make your life easier by letting you make instant reservations to over 10,000 restaurants. Doesn’t matter if you don’t know the place, the app will let you find it! One can also use his/her current location to find a restaurant nearby, one cane also view the menu, pricelist or reviews. Who said pleasing your date was a chore?
