Transfer media and files on Wp7 SmartPhone just like USB drive

You have a Shiny new SmartPhone running WP7 (windows phone 8) and wondering if you can transfer your loads of music, videos and other files onto the phone without using Zune software, well you are in luck, we have a little nifty trick which will configure your Windows based PC to connect to your SmartPhone just like USB or Flash Disk, allowing you to transfer all your files ( drag & drop just like in windows explorer).

The trick is pretty simple and involves few registry settings on your Windows PC to be modified, once done your PC will recognize your WP7 smartphone as a USB drive.

How to apply this trick in simple steps :

  • Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
  • Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB  (and not the other ControlSet01 or 02 if you have them) and then search for ZuneDriver
  • You will see at least one sub folder under the entry VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00. Choose the device folder for which you want this change for.
  • Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1 <- this enable Windows Explorer to show the device when plugged in
  • Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
  • Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1 <- this enables Windows Explorer to detect the device
  • Once its done just plug-in your device to your PC and you will be able to see it as regular Flash drive in my computer explorer window.

    Now another problem i have…

    I have downloaded adbe reader onto the htc hd7 and i have downloaded a couple of pdfs onto it, and can view these. how do i find the file space where these PDFs are stored on my phone so i can upload more PDFs onto it?

    After i get to ENUB/USB, what do u mean by search for ZuneDriver?
    Then when i get to VID…00, which folder theres so many?

    means do a search as in edit button, find “ZuneDriver”

    This may work for most phones, but not for HTC HD7s on the T-Mobile network. I was on the phone for 5 minutes with HTC and they said that it is a programing issue with T-Mobile and there are no changes in the works for it at this time.

    Does this procedure violate any terms of usage? I am looking for a feature like that but I want it to use in an application which shall be distributed. So, it is legal to do so?

    This is a simple registry hack which can be done in Windows PC, preferably Windows 7 . so it does not violate any laws and is legal. It does not temper with the Phone.. I hope it makes it clear.

    I did it,
    now it shows my phone twice (htc 7 trophy phone)
    but I can’t put anything in there…

    my Computer -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet ->Enum -> UBS ->

    here I have WUDF
    WUDFDiagnosticInfo
    ZuneDriver
    on device parameters I have all the things you said, I’ve changed them
    on ZuneDriver I only have: (Default)
    TransportClassID
    UseWpdPrivateInterface

    any sugguestions?

    OK, when I close it, I can see a storage folder with nothing in it,
    and I cant put anything in there….

    Well … with MANGO Update … we don’t any longer need to keep files downloaded on phone .. you can upload any file on Skydrive and access it with Wp7 ..  I am waiting on update to try this feature..
