Rare incident: Massive Spider Invasion in Sindh Pakistan

by Muzzammil Waheed on April 27, 2011

Holy Cow, I’ve never seen spider invading any place and this is an eye opener for me. The pictures below are from Province of Sindh, Pakistan and is the aftermath of 2010 Worst flooding in parts of Pakistan  when million of spiders took refuge on these trees from water and resided there for long time until the water subsided. The spiders converted these trees into giant cocoon or cobwebs to trap insects and mosquitos in a limited space.

This is a rare phenomenon and generally spiders tend to spin their webs independently in open areas and are not fond of sharing their captured prey with other spiders.

One of the benefits of this infection was decrease in the population of Mosquitos which are primary cause of malaria. Apparently the giant webs have not caused major damage to the trees but must have limited the supply of sunshine.
