Download Skype for Android!! Nimbuzz, Vopium and Truphone laugh all the way

by Muzzammil Waheed on October 5, 2010

skype-for-android Skype has finally released its app for Android (eclair) 2.1 and Froyo (2.2). The app will allow free Skype to Skype calls else where but USA and is also not available in China and Japan, but will allow free 3G calls. The Skype Android app works over WiFi, 3G, EDGE and GPRS all for free.

Download app by pointing your android browser to  http://skype.com/m, make sure sure you have enabled mobile mode on your android phone.

Don’t be dissapointed because skype android app right now has issues on Samsung Galaxy and Skype is investigating the claims. There are also reports about issues in usability like:

  • Back button doesn’t work
  • Poor UI implementation
  • Slow speed
  • No 3G calling in the US. At all. Doesn’t matter if it’s SkypeOut, SkypeIn, or Skype-to-Skype.
  • There is not video chat feature
  • And you cannot transfer files using skype.
  • Not available for Pakistan, Malaysia, Iceland and other countries

Perhaps its because Google want to push google voice ahead of Skype or is it bad implementation, it is yet to be seen. Let’s see how soon Skype can sort out these issues and shortcomings to compete with other top notch VOIP applications like nimbuzz, vopium, truphone etc which in my opinion are far better than Skype Android implementation.
