Facebook supports “@” tags in posts and statuses, is this really a big deal ?
Facebook has introduced another twitter style feature that is to allow “@” tags within the posts and statuses. These tags can be used to tag people, groups, events, apps and all other kind of things in user’s statuses and posts. These tags can also be part be part of URLs , notes and event titles.
Using these tags is simple enough, when you are writing a post in Publisher and while adding a person’s name add “@” character before the name. By doing this you will be presented with a dropdown menu populated with items matching the word ( friend name, group, event , application or page ) preceded with “@” symbol.
Interestingly the “@” symbol will not be visible in the statuses or posts and person name, group, event and pages will become hyper links in a status or post, and can be navigated and viewed by clicking on them. Sounds great to me. This feature in future will also be available for third party applications, allow them to leverage this tagging feature.
As Facebook already allow people to remove them self from tagged pictures, Facebook will also send notification to people who are tagged via “@” symbol and will be able to remove themselves from tags.
This is a pretty useful feature and will make the linking very easy in Facebook without actually remembering people name, event, page, group hyperlink, making publishing even faster.
See the working of this feature in a screenshot below.
In case this feature is not available in your profile yet, worry not, as Facebook is rolling out this feature gradually for all users and this might take several weeks.
