Twends: a Twitter explorer utility providing insight into tweeters sentiments
If you are interested in seeing what are the hot topics, keywords active on twitter, and what are the sentiments of people who are twittering about them, then I have the perfect twitter explorer utility for you. Twends lets you first of all search and then highlight the twitter tweets, conversations, sentiments and trends based on topics of your interest, then visualize the sentimental trends.
The main idea is to generate a sentimental trend ( positive or negative ) by extracting the tweets from twitter about a specific topic, this is achieved by processing several tweets at a time and cross referencing them with a large word dictionary, from tweets significant keywords with sentimental values are picked and the trend is generated about these keywords. The sentiments are displayed along with the key tags involved on the left side in green, white and red colors, green depicts a positive sentiment, red is negative while white is neutral.
There is a chart available which lets you visualize the tweets and the frequency by day, which is a good way to visualize the trend about your search term. The site also lists the top and emerging trends at the top which is quite help way to see what the world is tweeting about at large.
Overall it seems very interesting idea, though its a beta site yet but can provide a very crucial insight to product, services companies to see how people are reacting to their products, services and topics. I think as more and more people are starting to use twitter and are expressing their ideas, like and gripes on twitter, twitter is becoming a huge data warehouse, which can be minded to extract very interesting and useful trends. Filtering the junk tweets from millions of tweets will however, be interesting problem to solve and research companies are already on the task. Let us know if this utility is useful to you.
